A famous director of animes such as Shingeki no Kyojin, Berserk and more passes away

Satoshi Iwataki died a few days ago after suffering from an illness in recent months

The anime industry does not function without its workers, and even though we are always talking about the MAPPA, WIT Studio, Bones And more, the reality is that it is the personalities hidden behind the big names that allow this industry to move forward. Precisely, a proper name that had not stopped increasing in recent years was that of Satoshi Iwataki, a true reference precisely in MAPPA who, unfortunately, has passed away.

Satoshi Iwataki, one of the names of MAPPA, passed away at the end of 2023

Has been Iwataki-san’s own wife who, using the entertainer’s Twitter account, has informed his followers of the unfortunate event. This is everything you need to know about the situation (via @AoTWiki):

  • To begin with, what Satoshi Iwataki passed away on December 30, 2023. Apparently, Iwataki-san was wearing a couple of months admitted in a hospital for an illness that ended up claiming his life.

The Final Season of Shingeki no Kyojin was one of Satoshi Iwataki’s final projects
  • Iwataki-san has many works to his name, but it is surprising that This same year he became part of 3 major MAPPA projects: Shingeki no Kyojin: The Final Season, Jigokuraku and Maboroshi. On Shingeki he served as part of the ‘Key Animation’ team while on the other two projects he served as animation director.
  • Other big names that were part of Satoshi Iwataki’s career are the following:
    • Berserk: The Golden Age Arc – Memorial Edition (Animation Director)
    • Dororo (Character Designer and Chief Animation Director)
    • Satoshi Iwataki also worked on the Key Animation of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, One Punch Man, Toradora!, Death Parade, Spy x Family and much more.

The loss of Satoshi Iwataki is definitely one that the anime industry and in particular MAPPA will notice, since the animator had become a pillar to which the studio could return again and again if necessary. Although we will no longer be able to see any more work in his name, at least his work will be immortalized forever in some of the greatest anime projects ever released, and that is not something that anyone can sign up for.
