Katsuhiro Otomo published Akira on the pages of the Young Magazine of kodansha between 1982 and 1990, being compiled in six volumes. In 1988, his own mangaka was in charge of directing the animated adaptation, even with the manga unfinished, with the production of TMS Entertainment and distributed by TOHO. After its premiere, the work became a true success that further exalted the figure of its author, transforming Akira in a work of worship.
The movie of Akira has been published throughout all this time in different editions by select vision. The film is also available in streaming through the video-on-demand platform Netflix. In Spain, Editorial Standard published a 30th Anniversary Edition, with an extra volume called Akira Club, unpublished images and information on merchandising. He has recently republished the work in the oriental reading sense, conserving the onomatopoeia originals, and adding digital material for the first time under the supervision of the mangaka.
