Hajime Isayama auctions off the tables where he drew Shingeki no Kyojin

hajime isayamathe creator of shingeki no kyojin (Attack on Titan), had a colossal weekend at the third largest comic book festival in the world, the Angoulême International Comic Strip Festival (France). He not only received a special award, but revealed that he is going to auction off the desks on which he drew the work for Doctors without borders.

As part of the celebrations for the fiftieth anniversary of the Angoulême International Comic Strip Festival, Isayama received a special award in recognition of his work on shingeki no kyojin. The award was presented on January 28 at a special ceremony in France.

Also in the Angoulême International Comic Strip Festival Isayama’s work tables, used by him and his assistants, were exhibited, and it was revealed that they were going to be auctioned, with all proceeds going to Doctors Without Borders. In the video, Isayama explains that the desks were specially made by his father in his hometown of Hita, Japan to limit distractions during creation.

Isayama points out that due to the spread of digital drawing in Japan, the use of large desks has become irrelevant. The desks will be auctioned until February 11 and, at the time of writing this article, they range between 510 euros ($555) and the 1,750 euros ($1,902).

Finally, hajime isayama offered the following comment:

  • On this occasion, the desks used in the work room of “Shingeki no Kyojin” are auctioned. I asked my father, who was a furniture designer, to custom make this desk for me so that I could concentrate on my work. He was made by Nitto Woodworks (日東木工) in Hita, my hometown. “Shingeki no Kyojin” was created on these tables for about four years with me and my helpers.
  • Sometimes we had lunch, sometimes we went to sleep, sometimes we talked nonsense, sometimes we were tense before the deadline, sometimes we thought about the development of the story with those responsible, all the time we spent in production, the time of my youth, which came a little late for me, was with this desk.
  • Nowadays, when digital drawing has become mainstream and large groups of people are no longer working on manga, these big desks are useless, but I am deeply attached to them. Hope it helps someone else. I delivered an autograph and a special illustration for this auction. There has been a lot of sad news lately, but I will be donating the proceeds of your purchase to Doctors Without Borders in hopes of bringing a little peace to the world.
