Cosplay knows no limits (by Ainhy)

Honestly, I started watching this anime because of the hype that people had on social networks, I admit it. And luckily I paid attention to them, because what a surprise I’ve had. The story is about the world of cosplay and as a person, in this case, Marin Kitagawa is crazy about cosplaying her favorite characters, but she has no idea how to sew. She until one day she meets Wakana Gojô , a fan of Hina dolls , who knows how to sew, put on makeup, cut…, anything goes. At that moment, magic arises between the two and they will begin their great adventure into the world of cosplay.

The series counts down to the smallest detail: taking the measurements of the model, going shopping to hunt for the best products or the exhaustive elaboration of the suits . Of course, it is an arduous task that requires a lot of effort and time, but in the end, it has a huge reward. They also deal with taking professional photos and renting private studios, which I never would have imagined as I’m not used to cosplaying and I don’t understand much about it. I really liked that they gave so many details the truth.

As for the characters, Marin is my street favorite. She is crazy about manga and anime, she loves dressing up as her favorite characters and she lives it to the fullest in every moment. She is a true fangirl . She is adorable and endearing from the first moment. Gojô  is quite shy and doesn’t know very well how to relate to others, but little by little he will let go and get fully into the mute otaku, discovering that he loves it too. They both make a great, funny and adorable couple. Although the adolescent hormones betray them and they begin to feel stronger things for each other.

Although there is a lot of ecchi in the anime, the scenes are so funny and you have such a good time, it doesn’t matter. In addition, in many of them it is necessary, for example: when he takes her measurements, he must do it perfectly and for this he has to be in a bikini.

In conclusion, I have laughed a lot with each chapter. I think it’s quite realistic and explains quite well what it’s like to create a suit from scratch. I can’t wait for the second season to come out. Either that or I start buying the manga now.

You, me and our love (for cosplay) (for Cris)

“Gojo! Would you make me the costume for the cosplay!?” With this original statement begins one of the best romantic comedies of the season. Because if we never get tired of the first high school romance and the first chance touch of hands, how can we not love a series where cosplay is our particular matchmaker?

© Shinichi Fukuda / SQUARE ENIX · “My Dress-Up Darling” Production Committee

CloverWorks faithfully adapts the original manga by Shinichi Fukuda , where Wakana Gojô enters the life of Marin Kitagawa to sew her cosplay costumes, and between threads and seams, they become friends, they know each other and love gradually arises. And you will say, and what is special about it, apart from cosplay? Because we are shown a clumsy, embarrassing and reckless love that makes us smile and laugh at each insecure step they take towards the wonderful world of first love. All seasoned between intense sewing marathons and professional photo sessions.

I only have good words for My Dress-Up Darling , as it perfectly captures the story created by Fukuda and knows how to take it on the right foot, portraying the relationship between Gojô and Kitagawa . The moments of flushed cheeks and shy looks from her, makes you get excited with each new scene and that we end up in love with this childish and charming romance . In addition, it provides a very interesting cultural point such as the world of cosplay, which, although it is an element that is increasingly present in our culture, is still an exotic element for many fans. The series provides endless useful information, such as making patterns or knowing how to pose for photos, in addition to showing us how this hobby is lived in the Japanese country.

Perhaps the only negative point that we can get from the anime is its technical section, since the studio takes too much care with fanservice . Yes, we can’t deny that the original manga highlights Marin ‘s curves a lot , but seeing certain parts of her anatomy in motion, something that doesn’t happen in the manga for obvious reasons, can get tiring and hate certain episodes.

But all in all, My Dress-Up Darling is a beautiful, lovable, funny and cute anime that shows us the ins and outs of the mecca of cosplay while experiencing first hand a dream high school romance.

Stitches that reach the heart (by Corj)

I had never heard of My Dress-Up Darling until it was announced that it would be getting an animated adaptation a year ago (I guess I’m not the only one). After doing some research and seeing what it was about, it quickly caught my attention and I was looking forward to its premiere. A desire that increased even more when Panini Comics announced a few months later that it was going to publish Shinichi Fukuda’s manga in our country. The only fear I had after seeing trailers, images and so on, was that the story I was trying to tell would be overshadowed by the fanservice . But, to my relief, this did not happen. There is fanservice , and a lot, but it is something that goes into the background once you meet Wakana Gojôand to Marin Kitagawa .

That’s where the success of My Dress-Up Darling lies , in having a most adorable protagonist couple. It is impossible not to love them and to be aware of how their relationship is progressing in such a pure and at the same time so clumsy way. If people were recorded watching an episode of My Dress-Up Darling , I’m sure we’d never stop seeing smiles on their faces . In addition, the entire development of the series uses the world of cosplay as a common thread, which is another of its strong points, since rarely has so much detail been put into making the viewer understand all the work behind the making of a costume and its characterization.

As for the technical section, there is something that, in my opinion, stands out above all else: character design. I think that the CloverWorks studio has been able to transfer the characters created by Fukuda in a way that makes them dazzle on screen. In addition, the effort made to show the details of the cosplays that can be seen throughout the series is appreciated. But beware, this is not the only good thing about the series, since the animation works wonderfully and the soundtrack accompanies perfectly.

So what else can I say about My Dress-Up Darling ? Well, I love it and I feel obliged to recommend it yes or yes. Each of its episodes flies by, which is usually synonymous with having a good time. Of course, you have to be conscious that the free fanservice may be abused a little . But it is something that does not get in the way of the great experience that is to follow the “adventures” of Gojô and Marin in the world of cosplay, and see how their relationship evolves.

In love with a cosplayer, she drives me crazy (by Ann)

Gojô has a passion: making Hinamatsuri dolls with his grandfather and inheriting the family business. And well, this may not be the most interesting hobby among high school students… This is why the boy is somewhat shy, lonely and doesn’t talk much about it. Without eating or drinking it, he ends up helping Marin , the most otaku girl in the class, to fulfill her dream of cosplaying.

© Shinichi Fukuda / SQUARE ENIX · “My Dress-Up Darling” Production Committee

With all this setting assembled, the central theme revolves around cosplay from two points of view, that of making costumes and that of the phenomenon itself. Episode after episode many details of the world are discussed. Now all these points of general interest about sewing, costumes (and hina dolls ) are woven under a very clear plot and this is the relationship that is formed between the two protagonists. In fact, My Dress-Up Darling ticks all the boxes for a teen rom-com with a racy edge.

The dynamic between Gojô and Marin is based on the contrast of personalities, the shy and the extrovert united by a common cause . Between pins and dresses they get closer to each other. All very tender, but watch out, a sexual tension is also emerging that they don’t even believe. Each episode corresponds to 25 minutes of your mind going into “hee hee look at them” mode.

However, they will not be alone in this story. Other characters break into the series and will bring with them their way of seeing the issues that are discussed, among other things. The viewer ends up being the beginner who learns from here, from there, about everything that surrounds the universe of cosplay. In this way, it is possible to add a little more life to the plot (although in terms of character, Marin can lead the series on her own if she wants to).

The visual section is more than well worked in terms of design, but especially in animation. Despite not being the type of work that appeals to me, I was totally hooked seeing the facial expressions of the characters in the very first episode. The CloverWorks team focuses all the effort on the acting of the characters. The animation here has a lot of emotional force and maintains the level of quality as the episodes progress. Besides, and a bit in contrast, the ending video is very simple and so cute that it works great.

This anime has been one of the strong points of the season for good reason. The story follows the basic keys of the genre, it doesn’t seem like an innovative series as such and it’s not something negative, it just makes it comfortable and easy to watch. I also think that the theme is close to anyone who consumes anime, even if they are not dedicated to cosplay. It has a charismatic main character, they are super cute and there are undercover hotties, do you need more? It seems like a good option to me.

Endearing Eroticism (by Cooperlynch)

Is it possible to combine incessant doses of eroticism with an absolutely sweet, funny and entertaining story? My Dress-Up Darling anime comes to give an affirmative answer to this question. And it is that while so many series use ecchi as a mere claim, in this series we find the story of a couple of students whom life has brought together to complement each other. A shy guy with a special sensitivity and a popular gal, gorgeous and crazy with a pretty sweet side. Gojô and Marin are one of the couples of the year, and although their relationship is not yet established, throughout the chapters we see this growing attraction and friendship through the world of cosplay.

© Shinichi Fukuda / SQUARE ENIX · “My Dress-Up Darling” Production Committee

Obviously the world of cosplay is one of the central themes of the work. Through different “commissions”, in addition to seeing their relationship grow and living different experiences, all of them quite fun and sensual, the viewer is given a lot of information about pattern making, sewing, makeup tricks, hairdressing, etc. In other words, without being a cosplayer, any viewer will be grateful for all this information that enriches and greatly enlivens the work . This is what I mean by My Dress-Up Darling being special and not just focused on ecchi or erotica. However, when eroticism comes into action, it is resolved with enormous sensuality, taste and even a certain impudence, it is the perfect balance.

On a technical level , Cloverworks has done a wonderful job, going through a beautiful design of the characters and continuing through the great detail that is put into, for example, the costumes, the textures, in small details such as the nails or the hair of Marin , or the dolls that Gojô makes . And this is important, Gojô is a craftsman, and this gives the character a much appreciated depth.

The design of the scenes and the animation are also made with care, and this is noticeable when talking, for example, about different types of lighting for the photos.

Finally, the musical section stands out above all for a wonderful, colorful and catchy opening, and an ending full of adorable chibis that, as a whole, did nothing but want to see the next chapter.

My Dress-Up Darling is a wonderful comedy, with characters that make you fall in love, a great technical level and that turns the viewer’s temperature up into an art.
